RECENT PUBLICATIONS
Pine Tree Ballads is a poetic memoir, featuring the artist’s daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother as a single protean character (or multiple characters?) vibrating in time, navigating the mysteries and menace of a shared ancestral forest. This deeply personal photographic sequence is part visual narrative of family myths and part origin story. Pine Tree Ballads is fueled by both truth and imagination, which, in many instances are the fundamental ingredients of our personal history. The “docu-literary” structure of this monograph celebrates and fully exploits the duplicitous nature of photography/text to be simultaneously interpreted as both fact and fiction. At the surface, this project explores the emotive, contextual, and material constructs of history, culture, personal identity, memory, and folklore.
Candela Gallery is pleased to announce its second collaboration with One Day Projects founder and creators, Eliot Dudik & Jared Ragland. One Day Projects promotes creative dialogue by challenging artists to collaboratively produce and publish innovative projects within a 24-hour time period. And light followed the flight of sound is their third collaborative artist book inspired by both the natural wonder and symbolic possibilities of the 2017 solar eclipse. The book features photographs by 52 artists and is presented as a 30-foot-long, hand-bound accordion with an enclosed saddle-stitched zine and essay.
Against a backdrop of ecological decline, this memoir/travelogue follows Dr. Falke (the narrator), Count Orlofsky, and Madame Lulu, three members of an itinerant theatrical troupe known as the Truppe Fledermaus, as they stage absurdist performances in various locations including Europe, England, America, and Japan. In these performances, often staged in nature with no audience, the Truppe are as apt to commemorate the passing of an unusual cloud as they are to be found documenting their own attempts to flee the rising waters of a warming planet, or using black humor to comment upon the extinction of bats or other animals.
Candela Books + Gallery is currently seeking photographs made by photographers photographing their own families for our next book project.
We are looking for images that evoke intimacy, love, frustration, humor, absurdity, the ordinary as well as the extraordinary…
Photographs of your family life.
Photographs of your children, your siblings, your parents.
Photographs of your lovers.
Candela Books is pleased to announce our sixth book release, Direct Positive, with Richmond, Virginia native and fine art photographer, Willie Anne Wright. This new release is scheduled for November 2015 and will be accompanied with an exhibition at Candela Books + Gallery in Richmond, Virginia.
Wright, began her career as a painter. Beginning in the 1970s, her focus shifted to pinhole photography as her primary medium. Direct Positive explores Wright’s innovative use of Cibachrome color material and her production of unique direct positive images. Strangely saturated color, visual distortion and vibrant ideas gave rise to these beautiful and insistent objects.
Black Forest, the fifth title to be released by Candela Books, is an arcane collection of photographs from over 50 contemporary, internationally-renowned photographers, including Roger Ballen, Arthur Tress, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Elijah Gowin, Louviere + Vanessa, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Irina Ionesco, Julie Blackmon, Joel-Peter Witkin, Jane Evelyn Atwood and Gilles Berquet.
For a period spanning eight years or so, Gordon Stettinius, a photographer and a man of average appearance, sporadically visited the Mangini Studio in Richmond, Virginia, to have his portrait taken. Terry Brown, a fine art photographer as well as a commercial portraitist, happened, at that time, to be Mangini’s principal studio photographer. The first of the styled portraits Brown recorded came about as the result of Stettinius’ disquieting need to experiment with the proud but oft-maligned hairstyle known to some as the permanent wave.
Sunburn is now available for purchase at candelabooks.com! Candela’s third book release, in collaboration with Chris McCaw and Scout Design, features a collection of forty-three extraordinary images with essays by Katherine Ware of the New Mexico Museum of Art and Allie Haeusslein of Pier 24 Photography. In Notes on Watching Shadows Move in this volume, McCaw writes, “During [this project], I’ve become attuned to the reality that we’re all running around on a spinning marble orbiting a fiery ball. It’s that simple and amazing, but we rarely give ourselves time to ponder this.”
We are proud to announce our upcoming exhibition of photography by New York photographer Gita Lenz, opening February 3rd, 2012 and running through March 31, 2012, at Candela Books’ newly renovated gallery in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
Candela Books is proud to announce our upcoming exhibition of photography by Shelby Lee Adams, opening December 1, 2011 and running through January 28, 2012, at Candela Books’ newly renovated gallery in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
D.A.P. will be hosting a book signing for Salt & Truth, by Shelby Lee Adams,at the ICP Bookstore in New York City on November 18th, 2011. More information to be on the ICP Bookstore website soon.
We were traveling last week to be on press for Salt & Truth. It was a great pleasure to work with Shelby Lee Adams on the printing of his fourth book and first published by Candela Books.
We once again printed with Meridian Printing in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Working with Danny Frank was a pleasure and at the same time as our book was on the press, Lee Friedlander was on the neighboring press producing a 400+ page book of his self-portrait work. That was a little mind-blowing really.
Candela Books is very proud to announce our upcoming collaboration with Shelby Lee Adams to publish his fourth book, Salt & Truth.
This new release is presently scheduled for October 2011, and will be followed by an exhibition in Candela Books’ new gallery space in Richmond, Virginia. Several exhibitions, both national and international, are being scheduled to follow the release of the book. Distribution will be handled by Distributed Art Publishers.
Candela Books is proud to announce the release of its first title, Gita Lenz: Photographs. The book release coincides with an exhibition of vintage black and white photographs by Gita Lenz at Gitterman Gallery in New York City. The exhibition will open with a reception and book release on Wednesday, September 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. and continue through Saturday, November 20th.

Reenchantment
Photographs by Justin James Reed
6.33 × 9.33 x .91 inches,
204 pages
ABOUT THE BOOK
Creating delicate black-and-white photographs of encounters with the natural world, Justin James Reed discovers that reenchantment is indeed a gift. A gift that is offered by acknowledging the true reality of one’s past and the guides who have been there all along. Reed’s photographs show the beauty and fragility of beings that we share this planet with, exploring the quiet ways in which nonhuman entities communicate with us. Essays by Jo Hickey-Hall, Brother Richard Hendrick, Timothy Grieve-Carlson, Kim Philley, and the author himself are intertwined throughout the book, connecting a broader dialogue around the phenomena to Reed’s photographic practice. This book is ultimately about the authors own journey of connecting anomalous experiences from his childhood to a deep, lifelong relationship with the natural world.

ABOUT THE BOOK
We find it easy to relate to family photographs, even when those depicted are strangers. In part, because photography suggests the truth of a situation, we are lured into believing we are learning about the subjects, and, possibly, something about the photographers as well. But photos of family also vibrate at a universal frequency. We see vulnerable children or affectionate partners, and we can see ourselves and our loved ones there. It is the same for those images of aging relatives. Because those aging relatives are also our relatives, or even, ourselves.
Memory Orchards presents a broad survey of family experience, through highs and lows, through lust and loss, creating a survey of work which reflects our understanding of ‘family’ in this moment. The work is derived from long term documentary projects, from archive based explorations, from mundane interactions to moments of intimacy, from family snapshots to artful portraits. While the motivations of any given photographer are always distinctly individual, there are some foundational ideas which persist and are shared widely. Some artists write of their desire to remember, to document their own peculiar and beautiful realities. Others write of their desire to share their experience in hopes of adding to larger conversations about representation or identity. Taken as a whole, this engaging collection of work is complex and personal but deeply relatable.
Featuring 186 photos from 61 photographers, including Thomas Alleman, Hannah Altman, Debe Arlook, Niki Boon, Nancy Borowick , Tommy Bruce, Emily Buckley, Edgar Cardenas, Justin A. ABOUT THE BOOK
Kahn & Selesnick’s latest book project “Dr. Falke's Oraculum” continues the adventures of the Truppe Fledermaus, a cabaret troupe of anxious mummers and would-be mystics who catalogue their absurdist attempts to augur a future that seems increasingly in peril due to environmental pressures and global turmoil. During these journeys to such far flung places as the coastal cliffs of Ireland, the remote island of Fogo off the coast of Newfoundland, the sandy wastes of Cape Cod, and the muddy, muddy banks of the swollen Delaware, the artists considered circular structure of time and our attempts to make sense of the present by projecting our minds into the future, then mapped these various methods of prognostication onto the distant landscapes in which they sojourned. The results of these meditations were then transcribed onto the images of the Truppe's performances to produce a sort of personal Oraculum. As a result, this volume does not purport to be an instruction manual so much as a mindset that one might adopt while attempting to think about Augury.
That being said, the book is presented unbound so that it may be used as a bibliomancy oracle where pages can be shuffled and selected at random to receive messages and prophecy, much as one uses the tarot and other cartomancy decks. To this end, the artists found inspiration in "Napoleon's Book of Fate", an oracle purportedly unearthed in Egypt during a French military expedition in 1801 and supposedly consulted by the Emperor "before every important occasion". The fact that the upheavals of that time seem in many ways to echo our own only strengthened the desire to produce an Oraculum updated for this current, turbulent age.
In addition to being a sort of augury engine, viewers of the book will also get a glimpse of the real life adventures that inspired the artists to create their Carnival at the End of the World Tarot deck. Many of the characters and mummers included in that deck come to life in the book, dancing on the ice floes and mountain tops while being battered by the elements in their improvised costumes. These journeys, most particularly to Fogo Island with the Nomadic School of Wonder, allowed the artists to fully inhabit the notion of the carnivalesque.

ABOUT THE BOOK
In the early 1900s, artist Paul Thulin's great-grandfather settled on an island off the coast of Maine because it resembled his homeland of Sweden. Over a century later, his family returns to the same area, Gray's Point, each summer.
Throughout his life, Thulin's great-grandfather shared exquisitely detailed accounts of early settlers at the New England apple orchard; Such characters include a one-legged ship cook, a widowed schoolteacher, and an ingenious Native American blacksmith. The tales were an intricate mix of facts and lore that fueled the imagination and, on occasion, had the power to transform daily floorboard creaks and shadows into enduring ancestral spirits.
At the surface, this project explores the emotive, contextual, and material constructs of history, culture, personal identity, memory, and folklore.

The book, whose physical design format is modeled on Ukiyo-e series such as Hiroshige’s One Hundred Views of Edo, contains photographs of the Truppe, their travels, and their performances with corresponding text narrating the images. It is the author’s preference to have the pages of the book be loose and non-linear so that readers can explore the images and story in any order they prefer. As the incidents related in the book are frequently based on the artist’s personal experiences and travels, the reader is led to speculate about the somewhat arbitrary manner in which we build narratives out of our own experiences.
The beautiful images and corresponding text vignettes represent an enormous effort by these artists and rewards repeated visits, as even one reading is a commitment and with each visit to this collection, the story will have been again re-imagined.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Black Forest is an arcane collection featuring the works of over 50 contemporary photographers, including Roger Ballen, Arthur Tress, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Elijah Gowin, Louviere and Vanessa, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Irina Ionesco, Julie Blackmon, Gilles Berquet and many other internationally known photographers.
In this volume, editor Russell Joslin–long-time publisher of SHOTS magazine–follows in the steps of André Breton (from whom he borrows his title), exploring what he calls “subterranean beauty.” Darkly atmospheric sequences of surrealistic photographs become a metaphor for the unconscious and the mysterious corners of the psyche. Suggesting loose, intuitive relationships between the works of contemporary artists, Joslin creates four visual narratives associated in tone, emotion and formal structure, but allows room for his readers and viewers to render for themselves the hidden, connective layers of meaning.
This compelling collection of unconventional narratives is complimented by the strange and beautiful design of Jeff Louviere, who, along with his wife and collaborator Vanessa Brown, is one of the contributing artists to this dark and engaging photography book.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Sunburn isa collection of forty-three extraordinary images from American photographer Chris McCaw, with essays by Katherine Ware of the New Mexico Museum of Art and Allie Haeusslein of Pier 24 Photography. By constructing his own cameras – one camera weighing in at 125 pounds and large enough that it needs to be mounted on a garden cart – and exposing directly onto large expired gelatin silver papers for extended exposures, from several hours up to 24 hours, McCaw manages to coax highly controlled and delicate depictions of primeval landscapes and seascapes while at the same time allowing the sun, throughout its trajectory, to graphically sear its path across the surface of his prints, often cutting completely through the prints when the sun is at its strongest points.
McCaw has taken this notion of simultaneous creation / destruction and harnessed the resulting tension, working with the unpredictable process so elegantly that he manages a polished and highly crafted style but one which remains dependent upon the brute and visceral contribution of chance and light and the spin of the earth. And because he works directly with paper negatives, which are solarized by the prolonged exposures, each resulting image is unique, less like a photograph and more a three-dimensional object rendered using the sun as a reductive tool.
A significant aspect of what McCaw has done with this body of work is to create an intellectual bridge back to a time when astronomy was first being explored, when mystery was commonplace and it seemed primally essential to find our place in the greater cosmos. The message that McCaw has rendered here so beautifully is a fragile one, where the flattened dimensions we have come to expect from photography have been torn, revealing a fresh photographic understanding of energy which ignites an alchemical transformation of the traditional landscape.

ABOUT THE BOOK
For a period spanning eight years or so, Gordon Stettinius, a photographer and a man of average appearance, sporadically visited the Mangini Studio in Richmond, Virginia, to have his portrait taken. Terry Brown, a fine art photographer as well as a commercial portraitist, happened, at that time, to be Mangini’s principal studio photographer. The first of the styled portraits Brown recorded came about as the result of Stettinius’ disquieting need to experiment with the proud but oft-maligned hairstyle known to some as the permanent wave.
Not long after this initial effort, Stettinius began to sense a sea change in people’s general attitude toward him. After a little social experimentation around town and an abundance of hard-core introspection, the conclusion he drew was indisputable. His friends, he felt certain, had begun to crave his attention. His loved ones, it seemed, were loving him even more than before. And, more impressive yet, colleagues even had begun to defer to his opinions and wishes on matters of every description. In the fall of that year, his love life even turned around for the better.
To date, Brown and Stettinius have produced over fifty of these studio portraits. Taken individually, the images run from believable to the slightly ridiculous. Taken collectively, one has to wonder if these two might have found something more productive to do with their time.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Salt & Truth is the fourth book from American photographer Shelby Lee Adams (1950-present). This collection of 80 new photographs, taken over the past eight years, continues a project the artist has been working on now for over 30 years. Together these powerful images of the hollow dwellers of eastern Kentucky, represent a singular access to a world that is historically not very trusting of outsiders, by a photographer who is widely recognized as a master of the medium.
Since the release of his last book, Appalachian Lives (2003), Adams has continued to add to his extraordinary body of work. Born in Hazard, Kentucky and raised in a hollow similar to those in the book, Adams’ connection to the people in his photographs is evident in the way that he has been openly welcomed into their homes and lives. Adams, along with his 4×5 view camera, is allowed into the personal space of his subjects, a witness in times of celebration as well as times of hardship. The photographs in this collection are of children and animals, of older folks, of working people, and the various details as seen through Adams camera, speak eloquently to the larger issues of faith and respect and compassion when many others might have seen only poverty and desperation. Adams knows what it means to be from this place, of this place.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Gita Lenz: Photographs is the result of the efforts of two individuals, Timothy Bartling and Gordon Stettinius. Back in 2002, when Timothy, Gita’s friend and neighbor, was helping her move into an assisted living facility in West Greenwich Village, he was not sure what should be done with all of the photographic work that she had asked him to take care of. So, he contacted Stettinius, a friend and photographer, to explore what could be done with Gita’s photography. Together, they decided that by producing a book from the work and by mounting an exhibition as well, they could generate some interest in Gita and her photography. From there, Stettinius established Candela Books in order to publish Gita’s monograph and then arranged with Gitterman Gallery, in New York, to mount a solo exhibition, and ultimately to represent Gita’s photography. This book, along with the concurrent exhibition, are meant as a tribute to honor Gita’s beautiful photography.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gita Lenz is an American born photographer. Most active from the 1940s through the early 1960s, Lenz earned considerable recognition during her career, notably she was included in two photography exhibitions curated by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art . She was also included in a three-person show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and had numerous articles and features in photography magazines to her credit. Though initially she might have been described as a social documentarian, Lenz quickly embraced elements of Abstract Impressionism, possibly influenced by Aaron Siskind, a prominent photographer and good friend as well. Abstract compositions, surreal subject matter, and intimate portraits all attracted Lenz’ attention and each subject was carefully considered and beautifully printed.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Gordon Stettinius, a photographer and educator, has compiled and edited the photographs for this monograph of Gita Lenz’ photographic work and written an introduction to the work and the story behind the book. Stettinius lives and works in Richmond, Virginia and shows his own photography nationally and internationally. He is a recipient of the 2009 Theresa Pollak Award for Excellence in the Arts.
Candela is delighted to present Reenchantment, a solo exhibition and book release by artist Justin James Reed.
